Thalis Restaurant
My deevine sister and brother-in-law and one of my deevine nieces took The Husband and I out for dinner to Thalis on my birthday – thank you soooooo much! It was a deevine evening…okay, enough deevine’s, but it really was dee…
Thalis has an interesting concept that involves a set menu and food just keeps coming, which in my book is never a bad thing. Here’s the menu just for you:
Thali for 2 R650
A selection of dishes to share & can take up to 90 minutes
Potato and chickpea Papadum Chaat
Tadka Dhal
Chicken & Lamb kebabs, Tomato chili Jam & Pomegranate Raita
Tandoori Cauliflower, Coconut & Cashew
Cape Malay Pickled Fish Taco
Pineapple & Coconut Steamed Fish Salad
Mint & Coriander Chicken Curry
Panch Phoran Seafood Curry
I do have one criticism and that is that the first course isn’t a first course, but actually accompaniments for the rest of the meal. We were told it was our first course and we were hungry and ate it as such, but it was curry powder, a very hot sauce and poppadum’s all of which were needed to spice up the other courses (if desired). We’ll know for the next time, but I just wanted to let you know to eat only the stuff in the little pot and keep the rest for the other courses!
You get lots of little portions (but there is enough), so you feel you’ve eaten a lot more than you actually have. In a society where portions are so enormous, it was lovely to have reasonable portions and still come away full.
The service was super and there was an abundance of well-informed staff to explain the food and answer questions. We got there really early as apparently it can really fill up and you can’t book a table. This wasn’t the case on the night in question, but be warned.
All in all, we had a good meal and we enjoyed ourselves tremendously. Thank you again to the bestest in-laws going!
